My Book Review of Caine's Pestilence: A Novel by John Bascom

I want to thank John Bascom for asking me to write this review of his debut novel, Caine's Pestilence. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book. This novel was a page-turner which piqued my interest to know what was coming next after each twist and turn of the plot. Caine's Pestilence is a dystopian novel set in the near future in which there is a conspiracy by the government to influence its citizens by using its power to control their lives through every means possible. It gives us an idea of how things might look in the United States if we continue to allow government intrusiveness into our lives and permit it to expand like it has been steadily expanding and growing over at least the past 50 years or so.

The protagonist of the novel is a man named John Caine. John was just an "average joe" with a family living in Detroit, working as a bank manager, living the American Dream, when out of the blue he was contacted by an individual working for the National Institutes of Health who offered him the job of a lifetime, or so it seemed at the time. Reality was far from what it seemed for John Caine, for it was at the behest of the secret cabal within the government that he was hired in the first place. What happened next John could not have imagined in his wildest dreams, how drastically his life would be altered due to plans having already been set in motion.

As John Caine became more comfortable in his new position at the NIH laboratory he began to put his personal penchant for scientific tinkering to practice. He performed various experiments under the radar (which played into the conspirators' sinister plans for him). The unexpected result, not anticipated by either John or those who were secretly setting him up, was something that might also be considered the title character of the novel. I called Caine the protagonist, and not the main character or title character, because there is another contender for those descriptives: the "pestilence" that Caine produced - a virus which functioned not so much as a new disease, but as a virally propagated cure for an already existing condition. More than that I cannot reveal without dropping a huge spoiler.

The action and suspense of the novel kicks into high gear as the government is willing to resort to anything to control the cure so that they can ensure that it stays hidden and is kept a secret from the ordinary citizenry, for they believed that the cure was worse than the disease, at least as far as it touched on their power.

I highly recommend Caine's Pestilence as a fun and thought-provoking good read. This is one of the most intriguing and best novels that I have ever read.  You can find John Bascom's site here.

Hannity Interview On 'Occupy Unmasked'

This movie looks like it will provide a transparent look at the occupy movement, revealing the true nature of the movement. It looks like its going to be a great movie and I can't wait until it is released in June. The public needs to see the truth about the occupy movement since the media did everything to put a positive spin on this radical movement which is filled with Marxists, or left wing extremists and since the media refused to report the news accurately as far as on the violence which permeated throughout the occupy movement.

Assault on Free Speech: New Law Makes It illegal to Protest Near President or Any Person Who has Secret Service Protection

Judge Andrew Napolitano states that this new law is an assault on our constitutional right to free speech. He is absolutely correct. Under this law the secret service members are able to discriminate against those people who carry signs which may offend, challenge, or dissent from the person's political views of whom they're protecting. It is one thing to make sure that the President or any person who has secret service protection isn't harmed in any way, shape, or form but to give the secret service agents carte blanche authority on what they perceive to be acceptable speech is absurd, an example of government overreach gone wild in the name of so-called safety, and clearly a violation of our civil liberty, namely our God-given right to free speech that isn't supposed to be able to be taken away by our government officials. I am so sick of our congress criminals having the audacity to so easily and willingly give up our constitutional rights - the citizens liberties - so quickly in the name of security.  These violations of our civil liberties must stop!  This law needs to be challenged in the courts. This unjustified law must not be allowed to stand.

Is Peaceful Coexistence Possible?

Father Stephen Smuts posted this pic on his site and I found it very interesting.  Is coexistence possible? Or is that just a pipe dream?  If certain groups of people didn't practice violence and/or intolerance then maybe we could coexist with one another peacefully?

Girl Born With No Hands Conquers Disability To Win National Penmanship Award

This little girl is an inspiration.  I hope all those who have a disability will follow her example. This is a testament to Annie having a can-do attitude and her not letting anything stop her from attaining great achievements.  This girl happens to be from my neck of the woods, in the Pittsburgh area. Her parents must be so very proud of her fantastic accomplishment.

Students and faculty erupted in cheers on Wednesday as Annie Clark walked onto the basketball court at Wilson Christian Academy in West Mifflin.
Wearing the school's colors, from a yellow bow in her hair and matching cardigan to sparkling blue flats, the surprised first-grader blushed slightly and offered a faint smile as she clutched a trophy about half her height and a check for $1,000.
She learned she is the first recipient of the Nicholas Maxim Award, a prize from educational publisher Zaner-Bloser Inc. that recognizes exemplary penmanship among students with disabilities.
Annie, 7, was born without hands and won the competition for using her arms to write.
Someone asked afterward if she was scared.
"Not really," Annie said, "but kind of."
Tom and Mary Ellen Clark looked on proudly as their daughter received her award, and classmates doted over Annie as she demonstrated how she grips a pencil between her forearms to precisely write on lined paper.
Annie is one of nine Clark children, ages 4 to 29. The couple have three children biologically, including a daughter with Down syndrome, and adopted six from China over 17 years. Four of them, including Annie, have disabilities involving their hands or arms. Another child has Down syndrome.
"Each time, we weren't looking to adopt a special-needs child, but that is what happened," said Mary Ellen Clark, 48, of McKeesport. "This was the family God wanted for us."
Zaner-Bloser, based in Columbus, Ohio, this year created a category for students with disabilities after Nicholas Maxim, a Maine fifth-grader born without hands or lower arms, entered the 2011 general contest, said Kathleen Wright, head of the company's handwriting department. The company offered two awards for special-needs students. It will recognize a student near Cleveland today.
In its 21st year, the National Handwriting Contest has grown from about 20,000 entries to more than 325,000, Wright said.
When Annie arrived in Western Pennsylvania at age 2, Mary Ellen Clark said she worried that her daughter would need specialized help. Annie needed anything but, her parents said.
In addition to writing, she paints, draws and colors. She plays the board game Battleship and swims. She dresses herself and opens cans of soda pop. She uses her iPod Touch and computers without assistance.
Annie said she one day wants to write books about animals. Fiction or nonfiction, her first-grade teacher Laura Erb asked.
"Maybe both," Annie said.
"She's an amazing little girl," said Tom Clark, 49, owner of the namesake auto dealership started by his father. "It's a shame because society places so many rules on how people should look, but the minds of these kids are phenomenal."
Mary Ellen Clark said Annie often says she wishes she had hands, and her mother encourages her to focus on what she has rather than what she does not.
"I hope this just encourages her that she can do anything," she said.

She is indeed an amazing little girl.  She is a blessing from God.

Paul Ryan, His Faith, Subsidiarity, and the Federal Budget

During the first segment of this video - about 6:30 minutes long - David Brody the political correspondent from CBN News interviews Rep. Paul Ryan on his latest budget, his plan to solve America's money issues.

From Heritage:

How should one’s faith shape his or her engagement in the policy arena?
Political Correspondent David Brody recently asked that question of House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R–WI) concerning the Republican budget plan. In a taped interview for the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN), Ryan, a Roman Catholic, identified care for the poor as a fundamental tenet in the social teachings of his Church.
For Ryan, that teaching means: “Don’t keep people poor, don’t make people dependent on government so that they stay stuck at their station in life. Help people get out of poverty.”
Ryan believes his federal budget plan helps accomplish that goal. In a letter last year to then-Archbishop (now Cardinal) Timothy Dolan of New York, Ryan stated that his proposed budget better targets assistance to those in need, repairs the social safety net, and fulfills the mission of health and retirement security for all Americans. Furthermore, if the U.S. government continues to drive up the deficit through reckless spending, Ryan wrote that “the weakest will be hit three times over: by rising costs, by drastic cuts to programs they rely on, and by the collapse of individual support for charities that help the hungry, the homeless, the sick, refugees and others in need.”
In the CBN interview that aired last week, Ryan highlighted an additional principle of Catholic social teaching that informs his engagement in public policy: the principle of subsidiarity. CONTINUED

David A. Bosnich of the Acton Institute has written a very informative article explaining one of the key principles of Catholic social thought, the Catholic teaching of subsidiarity and sheds some light as to why the United States Catholic Bishops support statism, centralized government, as the primary solution for fixing social problems.

One of the key principles of Catholic social thought is known as the principle of subsidiarity. This tenet holds that nothing should be done by a larger and more complex organization which can be done as well by a smaller and simpler organization. In other words, any activity which can be performed by a more decentralized entity should be. This principle is a bulwark of limited government and personal freedom. It conflicts with the passion for centralization and bureaucracy characteristic of the Welfare State.
This is why Pope John Paul II took the “social assistance state” to task in his 1991 encyclical Centesimus Annus. The Pontiff wrote that the Welfare State was contradicting the principle of subsidiarity by intervening directly and depriving society of its responsibility. This “leads to a loss of human energies and an inordinate increase of public agencies which are dominated more by bureaucratic ways of thinking than by concern for serving their clients and which are accompanied by an enormous increase in spending.”
In spite of this clear warning, the United States Catholic Bishops remain staunch defenders of a statist approach to social problems. They have publicly criticized recent congressional efforts to reform the welfare system by decentralizing it and removing its perverse incentives. Their opposition to the Clinton Administration’s health care plan was based solely upon its inclusion of abortion funding. They had no fundamental objection to a takeover of the health care industry by the federal government.
Why the troubling contradiction between Papal teaching and the policy recommendations of the U.S. Bishops? Part of the problem may rest with the reliance the Bishops have placed upon commentators such as Monsignor George Higgins. In the spring of 1994 Monsignor Higgins gave a lengthy talk on the principle of subsidiarity to the Albert Cardinal Meyer Lecture series. Higgins stated that the “principle of subsidiarity is concerned with the relationship of the state to other societies, not with the nature of the state itself.” This view is wrongheaded. Subsidiarity applies to all human institutions, including the state. When the federal government usurps the rights and responsibilities of state and local governments, a flagrant violation of the principle of subsidiarity has occurred. If upper echelon bureaucrats in a Cabinet department operate in a top-down manner and deny any flexibility to their subordinates, the effectiveness of this department will be diminished. Higgins’s interpretation of subsidiarity exempts the internal operation of the various levels and branches of government from any critical scrutiny.  CONTINUED

Pennsylvania Politics: Conservative Feinberg Challenges RINO Tim Murphy

Evan Feinberg is challenging Rep. Tim Murphy in the GOP primary for the seat in the 18th district in Pa.

According to the Q1 report Feinberg has just used his last $80,000 to post the above ad on Fox News for the week.  He could really use all the support he can get from fellow conservatives, whether it be monetarily, passing on the word, or with manpower, to beat the RINO Tim Murphy.

From Politics Pa:

He also picked up the official endorsement of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review editorial board, which has been jazzed about his candidacy since the beginning:
Republicans have a golden opportunity in the April 24 primary to nominate a man who fully understands that sound economics is sound economics and benefits all socioeconomic classes.
That man is Evan Feinberg.
Mr. Feinberg cut his policy teeth at The Heritage Foundation. He later served as an aide to U.S. Sens. Tom Coburn and Rand Paul, two fellas who know a thing or two about sound economics.
The local Republican establishment rationalizes that a young and underfunded Feinberg, if nominated, surely would lose in November and hand the 18th District seat to Democrats. But what do they think they have sitting in that seat now?

Here are 10 Reasons why Tim Murphy must GO.  I will go more in-depth into the reasons in a future post.

  • 1. Tim Murphy consistently casts votes in favor of BIG LABOR at the expense of taxpayers

  • 2. Tim Murphy is a HUGE supporter of “GREEN ENERGY” (solar, wind, ethanol) by advancing tax incentives and subsidies for these uneconomic drains on our economy

  • 3. Tim Murphy loves PORK, PORK AND MORE PORK. Tim just can’t give enough subsidies and earmarks to his campaign donors.

  • 4. Tim Murphy supported UNION REQUIRED WORK ON MILITARY BASES & VA HOSPITALS.

  • 5. Tim Murphy voted for “CASH FOR CLUNKERS”.

  • 6. Tim Murphy voted in 2011 to ALLOW OBAMA TO ADD $2.4 TRILLION IN DEBT without one single cut or reform

  • 7. Tim Murphy is UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR ABUSE OF OFFICE and then FIRED THE WHISTLEBLOWER

  • 8. Tim Murphy is ranked as easily the MOST LIBERAL REPUBLICAN FROM PA IN THE US HOUSE.

  • 9. Tim Murphy VOTED AGAINST the Republican Study Committee’s 2011 BALANCED BUDGET PROPOSAL

  • 10. Tim Murphy is a CAREER POLITICIAN, seeking his 6th term in office and needs to be sent back to the private sector.
  • Light and Darkness

From Pope John Paul II in 1994:

"May prayer strengthen us for the spiritual battle we are told about in the Letter to the Ephesians: 'Draw strength from the Lord and from His mighty power' (Ephesians 6:10). The Book of Revelation refers to this same battle, recalling before our eyes the image of St. Michael the Archangel (Revelation 12:7). Pope Leo XIII certainly had a very vivid recollection of this scene when, at the end of the last century, he introduced a special prayer to St. Michael throughout the Church. Although this prayer is no longer recited at the end of Mass, I ask everyone not to forget it and to recite it to obtain help in the battle against forces of darkness and against the spirit of this world."'

    Saint Michael the Archangel,
    defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
    May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host -
by the Divine Power of God -
cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits,
who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.

    Amen.

Catholics Called To Witness: Your Vote Will Affect The Future

From The Blaze: Catholics Called to Witness (CC2W) is an organization dedicated to encouraging Catholics to participate in the political process while upholding “non-negotiable principles” of protecting life in all its stages, promoting traditional marriage and protecting parents’ right to educate their children.

    H/T The Blaze

There is one thing that I would like to point out. "Until natural death" doesn't mean that the Church is against the death penalty.  The Catholic Church has never been against capital punishment. The latest evolving view which states that cases where the public safety warrants the execution of the offender should be rare or nonexistent did not come into being until very recently.  The Church's position on the death penalty is not as clear and concise as those who would claim demonstrably that the Catholic Church is adamantly against the death penalty. That is hogwash.  There is definitive doctrinal teaching against abortion but not the death penalty.

    From Wikipedia:
Paul J. Surlis writes that Church teaching on the death penalty has been in transition.[1] The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that the death penalty is permissible in cases of extreme gravity. The Church teaches that capital punishment is allowed if the "guilty party's identity and responsibility have been fully determined" and if the death penalty is the only way to defend others against the guilty party.
However, if there are other means available to defend people from the "unjust aggressor", these means are preferred to the death penalty because they are considered to be more respectful of the dignity of the person and in keeping with the common good.[2](2267)Because today's society makes possible effective means for preventing crime without execution, the Catechism declares that "the cases in which execution of the offender is an absolute necessity 'are very rare, if practically nonexistent.'"[2]

Eric Holder Victim of Voter Fraud? Gee...Only If One of Those "Racist" Voter ID Laws Had Been Instituted Then It Would Have Prevented Voter Fraud Against A Black Man

You will see in the video that the person who uncovered how easy it is to commit voter fraud in D.C. makes a great point about the fact that persons are required to show I.D.'s in order to meet with any individual in the D.O.J. or Eric Holder.  I cry racism, racism, racism dangit. Oh yeah... that's right, according to progressives they can't be racists. Such hypocrisy from the Left. Plus, how could anyone not know what Eric Holder looks like? Have they been in a cave during these last few years?
